February 1 Join Mr. Gourley’s AP Social Studies class for that best day in the life of a student: a successful field trip. This month’s Best Practice features 1994 Golden Apple Scholar and 2010 Golden Apple Fellow, Jacob Gourley, and his amazing lesson plan. November 30 Northwestern University’s alternative certification program, NU-TEACH (Northwestern University Teacher Education Alternative for Chicago) offers a fast track to teacher certification for outstanding candidates, including career changers and recent college graduates. November 28 Our Best Practice selection this month continues showing the many practical and creative ways that teachers use the internet. 2005 Golden Apple Scholar, Monique Hickman, begins her classroom website in this way: Welcome to Ms. Hickman's English class, where failure is not an option. Monique, a relatively new teacher, encourages teachers to simplify their website development: I love technology, but building a website can become quite a tedious and frustrating task. Golden Apple Achievers
The 2011 class of Golden Apple Scholars represents a diverse group of young people from across the state of Illinois.
The Scholars program is designed to address the urgent need for resilient and creative teachers serving Illinois students in economically and educationally disadvantaged schools. Studies show that there is a shortage of qualified, enthusiastic teachers entering the profession, and a particular shortage of minority and bilingual teachers.
