Golden Apple Awards Television Program Honored with Chicago/Midwest Emmy
(Chicago - November, 2001) — The 16th Annual Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching, televised on WTTW, Channel 11, received an Emmy for the second year in a row. The show was selected for an Emmy in the category "Outstanding Achievement for Special Events Programming/ Special Events Program Created for Television."
The 43rd Annual Chicago/Midwest Emmy Awards were presented October 27, 2001, during a dinner and ceremony at the Fairmont Hotel. Chicago film critic and Chicago Sun-Times columnist Richard Roeper served as the emcee for the event. Network Chicago President Dan Schmidt accepted the Emmy on behalf of WTTW, noting the 16-year partnership between the Golden Apple Foundation, Northwestern University and WTTW/Channel 11, and praising teachers as heroes in our communities.
The Golden Apple Awards were created to honor ten Chicagoland teachers for excellence in classroom teaching. Teachers are honored on the primetime television show, and also receive an Apple Computer, a paid semester sabbatical at Northwestern University, $2,500, and induction into the Golden Apple Academy of Educators.
The Chicago/Midwest Emmys were judged by the local Washington, D.C. Emmy chapter. The Emmy award is given to the producer of the winning television show. The Golden Apple Awards were produced by Dick Carter, and co-produced and written by Jamie Ceaser. Roxanne DeGraff, Director of the Golden Apple Awards program at the Golden Apple Foundation, also worked on the broadcast.
The Golden Apple Foundation was founded in 1985 to promote excellence in classroom teaching. The Foundation sponsors the annual Golden Apple Awards for teachers, the statewide Golden Apple Scholars teacher recruitment program, the Golden Apple Teacher Education (GATE) program, and various workshops and programs.
