Golden Apple Foundation Marks Day of the Child by Introducing New Alphabet Bus to Encourage Reading

(Chicago - April 30, 2002) — Today, April 30, is the Day of the Child, and to mark the occasion the Golden Apple Foundation will introduce a new Alphabet Bus to encourage the reward of reading and a love of literacy among children. Jose Valentin and Minnie Minoso of the Chicago White Sox will help the Golden Apple Foundation launch its new "Alphabet Bus" by reading stories to kids at the Ortiz de Dominguez School at 3000 S. Lawndale from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. this morning.


Designed in part by children for children, the Golden Apple Foundation's Alphabet Bus is a mobile literacy demonstration site for children from six months to five years of age and their parents and caregivers. The Alphabet Bus's very colorful exterior was designed by youngsters at the Yollocalli Youth Museum.


Beginning today - The Day of the Child - The Alphabet Bus will appear at schools throughout the Chicago area. Guest readers will read stories to children on the bus. The Alphabet Bus will also be present at a special reception formally announcing its launch tonight at 7 p.m. at the Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum, 1852 West 19th Street.
