Golden Apple Foundation Stanley C. Golder Community Service Award Presented to John and Martha Mabie

John & Martha Mabie reveive award(Chicago - May 31, 2003) — While a major part of Golden Apple's mission is to honor outstanding educators, we feel that it is similarly important to recognize those who have a profound impact on our community through their charitable service and philanthropic generosity. Golden Apple annually presents the Stanley C. Golder Community Service Award to an individual, corporation, or foundation that perpetuates the vision of Stan Golder, one of the Golden Apple Foundation's most loyal advocates. Recipients of the Award have demonstrated a deep belief in the Foundation's mission and the Chicago community through their generosity and support.

It is Golden Apple's distinct pleasure to present the 2003 Stanley C. Golder Community Service Award to John and Martha Mabie of Winnetka, IL. For years, John and Martha have supported numerous not-for-profit organizations in the Chicago area.

After graduating with honors from Williams College, John spent 29 years at A.G. Becker. He served as Vice Chairman of the Board and as a member of its Investment, Operating and Audit Committees. John has served as a director and chairman of the finance committee at Reading Co. and as Chairman of the Petroleum Intelligence Group. He has also been a member of the advisory boards of three venture capital firms: Frontenac Company, New Enterprise Associates, and Syndicated Communications. Currently, he is Chairman of Mid-Continent Capital LLC.

John has shown great dedication to Chicago's civic arena as well. He is a trustee and former chairman of the Investment and Finance Committees of the University of Chicago Hospitals and is trustee of the University of Chicago. John has chaired the Brain Research Foundation, the Hadley School for the Blind and is a director emeritus of the Golden Apple Foundation.

Martha has also been an active civic leader. She has been a director of the Hadley School for the Blind, Winnetka Family Services, the Erikson Institute and the Women's Board of the Art Institute. She has also served as President of the Evanston North Shore Junior League and as chairman of the John Evans Club at Northwestern University.

Currently, Martha is a trustee of Northwestern University and is past president of the Women's Board of Northwestern University and a member of the Women's Board of the University of Chicago. She is also the Vice-Chairman, past president and a founder of Horizon Hospice.

John and Martha have four children: Karen Mabie Wampler of Glencoe, Janice MacVicar of Winnetka, J. Clinton Mabie of Evanston and Douglas Mabie of Winnetka. Mr. and Mrs. Mabie also have eleven grandchildren.

Past recipients of the Stanley C. Golder Community Service Award include: Kraft Foods, Richard and Barbara Franke, the John Nuveen Company, Arnold Weber, Donald Perkins, Stanley C. Golder, Mayor Richard M. Daley, State Senator Dan Cronin, and Martin J. "Mike" Koldyke.
