Golden Apple Achievers
The 2010 class of Golden Apple Scholars has been selected and this year’s group represents a diverse group of young people from across the state of Illinois.
The Scholars program is designed to address the urgent need for resilient and creative teachers serving Illinois students in economically and educationally disadvantaged schools. Studies show that there is a shortage of qualified, enthusiastic teachers ente ring the profession, and a particular shortage of minority and bilingual teachers.
Of the 105 students selected as 2010 class of Golden Apple Scholars:
- 45 percent are from the first generation of their family to attend college
- 33 percent come from low-income families
- 19 are male and 86 are female
- 46 percent are Caucasian, 30 percent are Latino, 18 percent are African-American, 4 percent are Asian/Pacific Islander and 2 percent are Multi-Racial
