Golden Apple Surprises Kingston Elementary School Teacher Maddi Bodine with Prestigious Award for Excellence in Teaching

CHICAGO (May 6, 2021) - Golden Apple, the leading Illinois nonprofit committed to preparing, honoring and supporting great educators who advance educational opportunities for students, today surprised Maddi Bodine, a Pre-K teacher at Kingston Elementary School in Kingston, with the prestigious Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching. Bodine is one of 10 teacher award recipients in Illinois.

Following a highly competitive process, the 2021 teaching award recipients were selected from a record-setting 708 nominations of Pre-K-3rd grade teachers.

“These outstanding teachers transform the lives of students, schools, and communities over the course of their careers. Their resilience and perseverance in this past year–and their career–-has been nothing short of amazing,” said Golden Apple President Alan Mather. “Our 2021 award recipients will now join us in our mission to impact the lives of even more students by supporting the next generation of highly effective teachers through our two teacher preparation programs - the Golden Apple Scholars and Accelerators programs."

The Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching honor outstanding teachers for having lasting, positive effects on students’ lives and school communities. Teacher recipients demonstrate – in their teaching and results – significant, positive impact on their students’ growth and learning.

About Maddi Bodine
Working with Pre-K children in special education, Bodine’s students arrive in her classroom with no previous schooling experience or academic records. Bodine uses a combination of parent interviews, observation, and formal, yet age-appropriate, assessments to determine a child’s strengths and areas for growth, and designs her instruction accordingly. In addition to her own teaching, Bodine works with a speech therapist, physical therapist, occupational therapist and social worker on a daily basis to ensure her students have the support they need to thrive. One of Bodine’s colleagues described her relentlessness in advocating for her students by saying, “She will try anything to get through to a student. Maddi has a passion and drive to find solutions to problems. She does not quit until she finds what will make a student tick and celebrates success even in what may seem like the smallest milestones to some people...As soon as her students walk into her room, they light up with smiles and greet her with hugs.”

Each award recipient receives a $5,000 cash award and a spring sabbatical provided by Northwestern University at no cost. Award recipients also become Fellows of the Golden Apple Academy of Educators, a community of educators who play an important role in preparing the next generation of teachers in the Golden Apple Scholars and Accelerators programs - which are dedicated to addressing the teacher shortage in Illinois.
