STEM Institute Program
Since 1989, Golden Apple has provided professional development in inquiry-based science instruction for over 5,000 Chicago-area teachers through its summer workshops. The Golden Apple STEM Institute represents Golden Apple’s strategic intent to take 20 years of professional development success to scale:
- Pilot cohort of 17 CPS schools located on Chicago’s South and Southwest Sides in 2010-12, with cohort 2 from 2012-2014. Cohort 3 launched July 2014.
- By 2015, 180 total teachers per year - five per school as an iTEAM (inquiry team) – implementing inquiry instruction in their own classes and sharing what they’ve learned with colleagues.
- Two-year relationship with each school, including two week-long science workshops (one in each summer), three follow-up sessions per school year, and ongoing, in-school coaching and iTEAM facilitation throughout the school year
- Expert faculty, including Golden Apple Fellows, as instructors
What participants are saying...
"I can tell you it was not only a wonderful experience, but I learned new skills that I could transfer across the curriculum. Without a doubt, the STEM Institute was one of the most worthwhile professional development workshops that I have attended since I became a CPS teacher."
